Dust Emission Features in NGC

چکیده
We present 0.35 to 2.5 μm spectra of the south and northwest filaments in the reflection nebula NGC 7023. These spectra were used to test the theory of Seahra & Duley that carbon nanoparticles are responsible for Extended Red Emission (ERE). Our spectra fail to show their predicted second emission band at 1.0 μm even though both filaments exhibit strong emission in the familiar 0.7 μm ERE band. The northwest filament spectrum does show one, and possibly two, new dust emission features in the near-infrared. We clearly detect a strong emission band at 1.5 μm which we tentatively attribute to βFeSi2 grains. We tentatively detect a weaker emission band at 1.15 μm which coincides with the location expected for transitions from the conduction band to mid-gap defect states of silicon nanoparticles. This is added evidence that silicon nanoparticles are responsible for ERE as they already can explain the observed behavior of the main visible ERE band. The 3 . 4 micron absorption feature towards three obscured active galactic nuclei
The results of 3–4 μm spectroscopy towards the nuclei of NGC 3094, NGC 7172, and NGC 7479 are reported. In ground-based 8–13 μm spectra, all the sources have strong absorption-like features at ∼10 μm, but they do not have detectable polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features. The 3.4 μm carbonaceous dust absorption features are detected towards all nuclei. NGC 3094 shows a detectab...
متن کاملSeeing Galaxies though Thick and Thin
The superimposed pair of spiral galaxies comprising NGC 3314 ooers a unique opportunity to trace the dust properties in a spiral galaxy. We analyze multicolor HST imaging, supported by ground-based near-IR imaging and ber-array spectroscopy to measure dust extinction in the foreground Sc galaxy NGC 3314A, which is backlit by the Sb system NGC 3314B. The superposition allows us to measure extinc...
متن کاملX-ray Emission, Optical Nebulosity and Dust in Early-type Galaxies. I. the Dusty Nebular Filaments in Ngc 5846
We present new optical imagery of the X-ray bright elliptical galaxy NGC 5846, the dominant galaxy of a small group of galaxies. A filamentary dust lane with a dust mass of ∼ 7 10 M⊙ is detected in the central few kpc of NGC 5846. The optical extinction properties of the dust features are consistent with those of dust in our Galaxy. The morphology of the dust features are strikingly similar to ...
متن کاملBimodal dust emission in three classical Seyfert galaxies : NGC 3227 , NGC 4051 and NGC 4151 ?
Far Infrared observations of the Seyfert galaxies NGC 3227, NGC 4051 and NGC 4151 are presented. These are the first data from a complete sample of Seyfert galaxies that is being observed by ISO as part of the ISOPHOT guaranteed time. The new ISO data, in combination with the IRAS data, show that the mid to far IR emission in all three objects can be ascribed to two well defined regimes, namely...
